A VRF error code is a fault identifier displayed by a variable refrigerant flow system, indicating a specific problem with the outdoor unit, indoor unit, communication bus, or refrigerant circuit. Each manufacturer (daikin, mitsubishi, lg, fujitsu, samsung) uses its own format. Codes range from sensor faults to compressor failures and refrigerant leaks.

VRF systems are commercial heat pumps, which is why error code patterns are consistent across heat pump brands. The underlying diagnostics are the same regardless of whether the building owner calls it VRF or a heat pump.

How to Read VRF Error Codes

VRF error codes display on the wired remote controller, the outdoor unit LED panel, or through the building management system. The full code on most platforms includes a system address (which outdoor or indoor unit reported it) along with the fault code itself.

If the same code appears on multiple zones, the fault is usually at the outdoor unit or on a shared bus. If the code is isolated to one zone, the issue is more likely an indoor unit or local sensor. The tables below cover the most common codes we see on Manhattan VRF service calls. For a searchable list of 450-plus codes across all five major VRF brands, use our free VRF error code lookup.

Severity and Response Time

SeverityWhat It MeansRecommended Response
HighSystem will fail or has already failed. Compressor, refrigerant, or communication fault.Same-day service. Do not power-cycle the system.
MediumSystem operates with reduced performance. Sensor or single-component fault.Service within 3-5 days.
LowLogged warning. Limited operational impact.Address at next scheduled maintenance visit.

How to Diagnose a VRF Error Code

  1. Record the full code and unit address. The code alone is not enough. Note which outdoor and indoor units reported it, plus the time it occurred.
  2. Check the brand-specific tables above for severity and likely cause.
  3. For high-severity codes, do not reset or power-cycle the system. Power cycling clears the display but does not fix the underlying fault and can mask diagnostics.
  4. Pull diagnostic data via the manufacturer’s tool (Service Checker for Daikin, AE-200 for Mitsubishi, LGMV for LG, etc.). This requires a factory-certified technician.
  5. Document what changed before the code appeared. Recent unit swaps, building electrical work, or refrigerant service often correlate to specific code patterns.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a U4 error mean on a Daikin VRV?+
U4 indicates a communication error between the outdoor and indoor units on a Daikin VRV system. It is the most common Daikin code and can cascade across zones if the underlying fault is on the shared bus or communication PCB. High severity. Do not power-cycle. Call a factory-certified technician.
What does a P6 or P9 error mean on Mitsubishi City Multi?+
P6 and P9 are M-NET communication bus failures between outdoor and indoor units on Mitsubishi City Multi. Common causes are wiring faults in risers, address conflicts after an indoor unit was replaced, or a failed transmission board. Both are high severity and require systematic bus testing.
What does CH 05 mean on an LG Multi V?+
CH 05 is a communication failure between outdoor and indoor units on the LG LMAP communication bus. Causes include wiring faults, incorrect DIP switch settings after a unit replacement, or a failed main PCB. On large Multi V systems with branch selectors, isolating the fault requires segment-by-segment testing.
What does an E416 error mean on a Samsung DVM?+
E416 is a compressor discharge temperature error on Samsung DVM. It triggers when discharge temperature exceeds the safe threshold, usually from low refrigerant charge, restricted airflow across the condenser, or a failing electronic expansion valve. On aging DVM S systems, recurring E416 often signals an oil return problem or a slow leak.
Can I clear a VRF error code by power cycling the system?+
No. Power cycling clears the displayed code but does not fix the underlying fault. The system will re-trigger the code as soon as the fault condition recurs, and you lose the diagnostic trail. For high-severity codes, power cycling can also cause secondary damage if the system restarts into a fault condition.
Are commercial heat pump error codes the same as VRF error codes?+
Yes. VRF and commercial heat pump are the same equipment. The error codes on the controller, BMS, or outdoor unit display are identical regardless of which terminology your team uses. Daikin VRV, Mitsubishi City Multi, LG Multi V, Fujitsu Airstage, and Samsung DVM are all variations of commercial heat pump VRF technology.
