Branch selector kits (BSKs) are the refrigerant distribution hubs in LG Multi V heat recovery systems. They contain multiple brazed joints, solenoid valves, and small-diameter piping connections — every one of which is a potential leak point as systems age. After about 6 years in Manhattan installations, BSK leaks become one of the most common refrigerant-related service calls on Multi V systems.

Symptoms

  • Recurring low-charge errors on the LGMV system
  • Frequent refrigerant top-offs (a sign you’re chasing a leak)
  • System fails to maintain capacity, particularly in zones served by a specific BSK
  • Refrigerant leak detected near a BSK cabinet during a service visit
  • Oil staining around BSK connections or valve bodies
  • Compressor running for longer cycles to maintain temperature

Common Causes

  • Brazed joint fatigue from thermal cycling — BSKs experience constant thermal cycling as zones switch between heating and cooling demand. Brazed joints fatigue over years and develop pinhole leaks.
  • Vibration-induced wear — BSKs near rooftop equipment or in mechanical rooms with adjacent vibration sources develop fatigue cracks faster.
  • Flare connection leaks — Some BSK connections use flare fittings rather than brazed joints. Flares loosen over time, particularly with thermal cycling, and develop slow leaks.
  • Solenoid valve seat or body leaks — Internal valve seat wear allows refrigerant to bypass; external valve body leaks come from gasket failure or thermal cycling damage.
  • Improper installation flux residue — Original installation flux that wasn’t fully cleaned can cause long-term joint corrosion that eventually leaks.

Our Diagnostic Process

  • Verify low-charge error history and refrigerant top-off records — frequent recharges point to active leaks
  • Pull system pressures and temperatures to identify which circuit is short on charge
  • Open the BSK cabinet (with proper safety procedures) and visually inspect for oil staining or visible damage
  • Use electronic leak detection on every brazed joint, valve body, and flare connection in the BSK
  • If multiple BSKs serve the same outdoor circuit, test each one to isolate which has the leak
  • Pressure test isolated sections to confirm leak source before opening the system

Repair

Repair varies by leak location and severity. Single brazed joint repairs require refrigerant recovery, joint cleaning, re-brazing, pressure test, evacuation, and recharge — typically 4 to 8 hours of skilled labor. Multiple leaks in the same BSK may justify component replacement. Severely degraded BSKs (multiple leaks across multiple connections) typically warrant full BSK replacement. We provide clear estimates after diagnosis and recommend the most cost-effective path.

Prevention

BSK leaks are largely a function of age and thermal cycling — they cannot be fully prevented. But annual maintenance that includes BSK visual inspection, electronic leak detection at every connection, and refrigerant charge verification catches developing leaks early when repair is least costly. For Multi V heat recovery systems past year 6, semi-annual BSK inspection is the standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

How urgent is a BSK refrigerant leak?+
Active leaks cause progressive capacity loss and force the compressor to work harder, accelerating compressor wear. Schedule diagnosis within 1 to 2 weeks of detection. Don’t keep adding refrigerant without finding the source — that masks the problem and inflates operating cost.
Can BSK leaks be repaired in place?+
Most can be — brazed joint repairs and individual valve replacements are standard work. Full BSK replacement is only needed when multiple connections have failed.
How much does BSK leak repair cost?+
Single joint repairs typically range $1,500 to $4,000 including refrigerant recovery and recharge. Multiple leak repairs or component replacement scale up. We provide clear estimates after diagnosis.
Is it normal to top off refrigerant on a healthy LG Multi V?+
No. A healthy Multi V system should not require regular refrigerant top-offs. If you’re adding refrigerant more than once per year, there’s an active leak that needs diagnosis.
Does Mountain Mechanical handle EPA-compliant refrigerant recovery and recharge?+
Yes. All our technicians are EPA Section 608 certified, and we use proper recovery, evacuation, and recharge procedures on every BSK service.
