LG Multi V is LG’s commercial LG VRF platform. LG VRF systems are commercial heat pumps. LG’s commercial heat pump lineup (Multi V 5, Multi V Water IV, Multi V Heat Recovery) has been installed across Manhattan over the past decade, particularly in projects where developers wanted an electrified alternative to gas-fired or chilled-water systems.

LG Multi V in Manhattan
LG entered the North American VRF market later than Daikin and Mitsubishi but has rapidly gained ground with competitive pricing, strong efficiency ratings, and aggressive engineering support. In Manhattan, Multi V is increasingly specified for mid-rise commercial buildings, mixed-use developments, and retail franchise locations where the cost-to-performance ratio matters.
The first wave of Multi V installations in Manhattan is now 6 to 10 years old. While newer than many Daikin and Mitsubishi installs, these systems are entering the age range where maintenance lapses start producing failures. LG’s proprietary communication protocol and diagnostic requirements mean general HVAC contractors are often unequipped to service Multi V properly.
Mountain Mechanical’s technicians are LG-certified and trained on the Multi V diagnostic platform, including the LGMV central controller and AC Smart software. We handle everything from emergency compressor replacements to routine filter service and coil cleaning.
Common LG Multi V Issues
CH 05 Communication Error
Communication failure between outdoor and indoor units on the LG LMAP bus. Causes include wiring faults, incorrect DIP switch settings after a unit replacement, or a failed main PCB. On large Multi V systems with branch selectors, isolating the fault requires systematic segment testing.
CH 21 Compressor Overcurrent
The compressor is drawing more current than the inverter allows. On aging Multi V systems, this typically indicates worn compressor bearings, a degraded condenser coil forcing high head pressure, or an inverter board approaching end of life.
CH 26/27 Compressor & Discharge Overheating
These errors indicate the compressor or discharge pipe temperature has exceeded safe limits. Common causes are low refrigerant charge (leak), restricted airflow over the condenser, or a failing compressor. Running the system with these active faults risks catastrophic compressor damage.
Refrigerant Leak at Branch Selector
LG Multi V heat recovery systems use branch selector kits (BSKs) to distribute refrigerant. The brazed connections at these junction points are susceptible to leak development over time, particularly in buildings with thermal cycling and vibration from adjacent mechanical equipment.
LGMV Software Integration Issues
LG’s central controller and AC Smart platform require proper network configuration and software updates. Older installations running outdated firmware may experience communication dropouts, scheduling failures, or inability to interface with building management systems.

When We Take Over LG Multi V Service From Another Contractor
LG Multi V takeover work is a growing share of our practice. Many Multi V systems in NYC were installed by mechanical contractors who built a quick install pipeline during LG’s aggressive market expansion in the 2016 to 2020 window, then did not build out a long-term service capability to match. Building owners are now discovering that their installing contractor either cannot service the system properly, or is unresponsive.
Our takeover starts with a system inventory. Multi V outdoor unit models, branch selector kit topology, indoor unit count, LGMV or third-party controller configuration, and any open CH codes. Second visit, we pull diagnostic data off LGMV and AC Smart and correlate it against the building’s commissioning report if available. The real issues almost always surface in that data. Bad refrigerant charge, BSK leaks that were never properly addressed, or DIP switch addressing errors that have been quietly corrupting zone control for years.
Our goal on a takeover is to stabilize the system and document it properly before any replacement discussion. See our VRF contractor takeover page for how we structure these transitions.
Repair or Replace: The LG Multi V Decision Point
Most Multi V systems in NYC are now 6 to 10 years old. This is still well within the window where repair almost always makes financial sense. Compressor replacement on a Multi V outdoor unit is straightforward for a properly certified contractor. Inverter boards are sourceable. BSK leaks are repairable. Refrigerant charge issues can be corrected without touching the outdoor unit.
The decision shifts only when multiple major components have failed concurrently, when BSK topology changes are required due to building renovation, or when the building’s load profile has fundamentally changed since the original design. LG Multi V ran primarily on R-410A, and the same long-term regulatory trajectory toward lower-GWP refrigerants that affects every VRF platform will eventually factor into the calculation.
We help owners avoid the default vendor script that always recommends replacement. See our commercial heat pump repair guide and our refrigerant leak signs page for the diagnostic context.
